I originally thought about making a trip to the summit of Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain in the world [Mt. Everest is the highest, but Mauna Kea starts at the ocean floor technically, so it's quite a bit taller]. Since rental cars are questionable on Saddle Road, I decided that the cost of a guided trip just wasn't worth it. There are some world-class telescopes atop that mountain, and I've read that the air up there is some of the cleanest in the world.
