Too bad it was so dark by the time we got to this point. I believe this lava flow occurred during the spring of 2003, though I'm not entirely sure. Regardless, you can see how the lava was unstopped by the roadway. It's neat to see how the road that I walked on the last time I was in Hawaii (spring of 2001) was now under hardened lava rock.
