Snorkle time! We had a snorkling tour with Dolphin Discoveries, which the both of us thoroughly enjoyed. The snorkeling in Kealakekua Bay was amazing -- it was like swimming in giant fish tank! We also snorkled at Pu'uhonua o Honaunau, though the variety and abundance of fish was not quite what they were at the previous snorkling spot. We boated around for a little bit trying to find dolphins, but none were seen. After lunch (at a fast food joint), we went back to the Hapuna Prince to shower, before we made our way back around the east side of the island, en route to Volcanoes National Park (VNP).
We stopped at a Walmart in Hilo to get some snacks and a couple of flashlights, after which time we drove to VNP. While there were occassional showers, rainfall was much less widespread than in our earlier attempt to tour VNP. We spent the next 5 hours exploring the park, and it was really fun (and cool)! How often do you get to see lava flowing into the ocean? We hiked several miles to get closer to the action, but we only made it about half way before turning around. From what we were hearing from many others, the view at the area that we stopped was about as good as any we'd have for the next 4 miles. Given the length of time it would take to hike that 8 extra miles (roundtrip), we opted to take in what we had. We were also getting quite hungry, so heading back to the car seemed like a good idea. Dinner was a late fast-food trip in Hilo. While I'd rather eat in local joints while in an exotic locale, fast food is convenient, fast, and cheap. At times, this is just what we wanted.
