An amazing transition from the lush, green environment of the area north of Hana to the dry, brown environment south of Hana. I actually enjoyed this side of the mountain better, I think. Much of the road to Hana looks the same (e.g. green, lush, lively); this is fine for the first 10-15 miles, but fades as one's concentration on driving safely gets a little tiring. There's just something about the sculpted landscape of the dry side... Speaking of driving, I didn't find it much worse than driving on some of the roads I've been on while storm chasing. There are plenty of hair-pin turns and one-lane bridges, but nothing that's difficult if you drive 25-30mph. After Hana, however, the quality of the road drops greatly. While it's certainly passable, it's slow-going!
