2006 AMS Annual Meeting

Atlanta, GA

In 2005, it was San Diego; in 2006, it was Altanta. I'm talking about the AMS Annual Meeting, a large gathering where more than 3000 meteorologists, students, and others interested in the science meet to listen to talks and presentations. I, along with many other students, stayed at the Hyatt a few blocks northeast of the Georgia World Congress and Centennial Olympic Park. It was a pretty nice hotel, though the rooms weren't much bigger than 'standard' hotel rooms. In addition, they charge $10/day for wireless internet... C'mon now, how can $40/night places like Motel 6 offer wifi for free, yet >$150/night Hyatt has to charge $10/day? Oy.

More of Centennial Olympic Park. Another statute at the park. Centennial Olympic Park. I'm not entirely sure what building this is, but it's visible from the park. A panel discussion covering The Weather Channel's coverage of hurricanes. From left to right: Tim Cantore, Stephanie Abrams, Jeff Morrow, and Stu Ostro. At the NASA display, this is a satellite view of the clouds projected onto a sphere / globe. It's actually kinda neat. On the way back to DFW from ATL, we flew atop a solid layer of altostratus / cirrostratus, giving this soft-cotton cloud appearance.
