APRS: Where I Am
This year I will be utilizing APRS (Automatic Position Reporting System) with my ham radio. Unlike last year, when I ran into several problems and incompatibilities, I'm hoping to have this up and running on each chase (well, those in which I bring my laptop, which is most of them). This allows me to transmit my position (among other things, such as an email) to receiving stations (with IGATE capabilities), where the information can be "posted" onto the internet. I will be trying to use APRS as much as possible while on a chase. So, if it's a severe weather day, check back here often to find out exactly where I am!
UPDATE: I've made a VB2005 program that will read my GPS lat and lon position and use the "inputpos.cgi" script at findu.com to update my APRS position. If I'm moving (greater than 10 m/s), the position will update every 2.5 minutes; if my speed is less than 10 m/s, the position will update every 5 minutes. This program does not run (and thus the position does not update) unless I'm running the program and have a GPS lock. Of course, this will also only work when I have an internet connection, though I've had nearly 100% data coverage during the past few storm chases.
